Meet your September 2023 Veteran of the Month, Michelle Torres.

Known to her friends as “Mitch,” Michelle enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2001 and served nine years as a Landing Support Specialist, or a “RedPatcher,” before separating as a Sergeant in 2009.

Mitch regularly participates in Veteran Social Club’s Task Force Give and VFW Post 12198. On top of volunteer projects, she also enjoys spending time with one of her many tribes: Merging Vets and Players and the Marine Corps League Greater NV Detachment 186.

We asked Michelle about her involvement with Veteran Social Club and the Veteran and Military Community in Las Vegas. Here’s what she said:

What is the biggest thing you’re involved with now as a Veteran?

I enjoy volunteering when I get a chance. Throughout 2023, I have become more involved in coordinating a local hike here in Vegas with the non-profit organization called Irreverent Warriors. Their mission is to bring veterans together using humor and camaraderie to improve mental health and prevent veteran suicide.

Why do you like to participate with Task Force Give and Veteran Social Club?

Veteran Social Club events and personnel are always a blast. It's about getting out there and socializing with other veterans in the local area. Many veterans need these types of events that will get them more involved with their community and have a chat or two with another veteran.

What things would you like to see in the future from VSC or in the Veteran community?

In the future, I would like to see this organization continue with its path and vision; y'all are doing a great job!

Got any advice for Veterans who want to connect with others or are struggling to find a place for themselves?

Sometimes, you have to push yourself just to make it to an event. Once you make it to an event, just say hello to someone...that's when the ball will start rolling. Many of us have struggled with connecting with others, but you have to take that step forward and keep moving in that direction.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Michelle!
